A Hunger for Purpose
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
When the last adventuring party aided Birchlake, they finished 99% of the job. Unfortunately, the last one percent may doom the town of Birchlake. Skittering across the floor of a destroyed laboratory, a small cockroach steps around a puddle of spilled goo. A tendril whips out of the puddle, ensnaring the cockroach. As the cockroach fails to struggle free, the tendril slithers through a crack in its shell, wrapping around its small core of neurons. The cockroach spasms then its legs slow curl inwards. A second goes by, before an identical cockroach emerges from the puddle. Assimilation complete. Nearby, the town of Birchlake sleeps peacefully, as the monster below begins its own path for survival.
A Hunger for Purpose is a 5/5.5e One Shot Mystery Adventure, featuring 4E's Skill Test and an in-game timer leading to a Forged in the Dark narrative conclusion. The conclusion is explicit, while also being open-ended, providing players to provide input to the final touches of the story. This adventure pack also features maps, statblocks and several powerful magic items that tie to the narrative, as well as many useless and mundane ones ripe for creative use.
The adventure text is written to simultaneously provide set pieces that tie directly to story structure, while also providing advice stemming from over 10 years of DM-ing experience on how to run, how to create tension and how to roleplay through the various mechanics provided.
This adventure is designed for DMs of all levels. It can provide insight into other game systems, and leverages the best parts about DND: creativity, humor, and tension.
This adventure is dedicated to my friend Josh Greenway. Miss you and all of your antics dearly.
