The Animal Within is a D&D 5e one-shot adventure for level 3 characters that blends stealth, roleplay, and moral choice into a contained laboratory dungeon.

The party awakens imprisoned in an alchemist’s underground facility—transformed into animals by a failed experiment. With their minds intact but bodies altered, the characters must escape captivity, avoid detection, and uncover the truth behind their transformation.

The laboratory belongs to Ellisar, a brilliant but obsessive alchemist who believes his work will “improve” humanity by granting animal traits. He is not evil, and he does not see himself as cruel—yet his experiments on unwilling subjects continue, aided by mutated creations that patrol the halls and alert him to intruders.

To regain their human forms, the party must gather rare alchemical components scattered throughout the lab and brew an antidote. Once restored, they face a final decision: leave and survive—or confront Ellisar and end his experiments for good.

The Animal Within is ideal for groups seeking a fresh twist on dungeon play, where ingenuity matters more than raw power—and the final choice may matter more than the fight itself.
